So I am a couple days behind in my reading due to a slight detour and distraction; and I am not doing that well at this blog thing--ever since Steven May shot my first 2 posts out of the water:). Jk Steven! But tonight I found myself reading Genesis 17 and the story of the Israelites and the Amalekites. And as I came across verse 12, I couldn't help but think--I am so grateful for the Aarons and the Hurs that God has placed in my life. The people who God has given a common goal; a common enemy to fight; a common ministry--yet different roles. The kind of people who are consistent and caring. The kind of people who get what you are trying to do; see it as a God thing; and want to help you in whatever way they can.
There are many people who come to mind over the 2 short years of ministry that I have had with the college students at Kirby Woods. My wife is the best. Many students are amazing. Many of my fellow staff workers have listened to me and lifted me up when I was feeling the strain of my ignorance. But I really think that of all the Aarons over the last year, Jeff Jones is the one that sticks out the most tonight. I remember a particularly difficult time in my ministry where Jeff took the time to ask me a simple question that spoke to my heart at the time. It was as though he was saying to me--keep the arms up. And while I am not sure he will ever read this...or if anyone will for that matter...I just want to encourage you, that if you are...find someone to encourage today. If you see someone getting tired; let them know they have made a difference (if they really have) in your life. Let them know you appreciate them. Help them in carrying any burdens they are willing to unload; and you are able to carry. Be there to lighten their load; to offer a seat; or whatever may be needed.
And in this story I love how verse 12 places all three of these people side by side. Too easily we can fall in to the trap of competing with one another; yet in reality--we all have a common task. I am grateful for wise, elderly (:)) men like Jeff Jones who can be a living example of this lesson for me. Thanks Jeff. I pray that this note, if it gets to you, will help steady your hands for a moment. Your ministry is making a difference and in the words of my friend CM, "I praise the Lord for you."
For His Glory,
Mike
