Marriage: Gladness, Gravity and Glory

REFLECTIONS ON LOVE & MARRIAGE  Ephesians 5:22-33 says, 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ ishead of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, solet the wives be to their own husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also lovedthe church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with... Dating Notes: Love, Dating, Marriage and Sex series

Tonight I want to begin by laying out a very vague definition of dating: the bridge between friendship and marriage in our culture   Dating is not a biblical concept.   Courting is not a biblical concept.   Romantic, sexual love is; marriage is; sexis—dating is our device that takes us from attraction to an altar.   Nowhere in Scripture does it say, “And Mosestooketh her to Chili’s.”   As far as tonightis concerned I want you to know that when I say dating this is what Imean.   ... Proverbs 4:23 Dentists, Dates and Deceit

"Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life." (Proverbs 4:23) So, I recently had the joy of a Thursday morning cleaning at the dentist's office.  The day of my appointment I found myself with floss in hand, teeth in view and mirror reflecting the image of a slacker.  It had been 6 months since my last cleaning and in that moment of flossing I thought to myself, "I wonder if she will ask me if I have been flossing."  Cleverly, or deceptively, you pick your... Dating Notes: Unedited SS version

WHO TO DATE: 1.A believer (2 Corinthians 6:14, Deuteronomy 22:10, Amos 3:3) · If Christ is the most fundamental reality ofyour being, how could you ever be united with a person who doesn’t think as you. · “Evangedating” is DANGEROUS; you will do thatguy/girl no favor by winning them to Christ and then kicking them to the curb!   o  Get yourself a couple “Go to girls” or “Go toguys.”   If you are a guy and a young girl likes you; you know she is... "Take my heart," "My achy breaky heart..."?

"Take my heart Lord, take and seal it.  Seal it for Thy courts above."  I can't say that I fully grasp the depths of these words.  In the drive to work this morning I had found a great deal more than I ever had before.  And up until writing this He has further allowed me to consider these words. The overarching truth: this is a hard thing to pray.   Take my heart.  Man, that is intimate.  That is intense.  That is dangerous.  I remember hearing, as a  kid, wisdom... Read More

Love Notes #2: Analogies, plastic pieces, adverbs and 'living' single

Love Notes #2: Sunday School "Love is like the ocean waters: Let us sail on its glorious waves, Until they place us in our mortal graves." Q. What other analogies have you heard of, as pertains to romantic, sexual love? A. Love is like a fire A. Love is like a hurricane A. Love is like a calm stream that carves out the land before it (or... Read More

"Love Notes" from "Love, Dating, Marriage and Sex" series

A man I greatly admire once set his pen to write these words which we find in Scripture, There are three things which are too wonderful for me, Yes, four which I do not understand: The way of an eagle in the air, The way of a serpent on a rock, The way of a ship in the midst of a sea, And the way of a man with a young woman. As... Read More

Wise in one's own eyes.

Take a few minutes to read and meditate on Proverbs 26:1-11.  Go no further please.  The Bible is way more insightful than my words.  God will enlighten your eyes, rejoice your heart and revive your soul, if He sees fit to do so today, by His word, not mine. Having read them, what is going on inside your heart and mind?  What are you thinking?  Imagine this "_________" were a blank for you to write in your initial thoughts; what would your blank read? Mine was such that I couldn't help but... Read More

What is sanctified in my heart?

So here is the question, "How would you feel if tomorrow you learned that you had to sell everything you owned?"  Everything.  Not because you wanted to; but you had to!  How would you feel? Words like depressed, angry, sorrowful, confused, frustrated are the first the run to my mind.  The list could be expanded.  However, there is a good chance that "joy" would not be on that list.  So, here is the question that came to mind as I read "In Our Joy" (a small pamphlet written by John Piper) the... Discipleship: Emulation or Imitation?

John Owen once wrote, "If vain spending of time, idleness, unprofitableness in men's places, envy, strife, variance, emulations, wrath, pride, worldliness, selfishness, (1 Cor 1) be badges of Christians, we have them on us and amongst us in abundance." While Owen penned this idea I believe the LORD used it to pierce through much of my heart.  The strength of this statement comes from the fact that Owen simply looked at the command of Scripture, the climate of Christian culture in his day and... Blog or Bible? Man or God?

So I am officially not a good blogger.  As you can tell from the date of my last entry, wow... I have kind of dropped the ball.  I wish I could say that blogging was  the only area of my life that I drop the ball.  However, I realize all-too-often that things that once were marked important in my mind have a subtle way of slipping into the neglect category. I can honestly say that few things slip into the neglect category for 16 months like my blogging has (June 2010-October 2011).... Read More

Ignorant of the World

"If I perish, I perish."  "No reserves.  No retreats.  No regrets."  These are 2 quotes. From 2 persons.  Born in 2 separate continents.  One from a young woman; the other from a young man.  Yet it is here that the differences stop and the commonality of the 2 comes in to full view.  That commonality is Christ.  That commonality is not only Christ, but the belief that Christ is worth it.  But it is such a vague pronoun.  What is it? ... At His Feet (Luke 10:38-42)

I believe that this is precisely where our church, Kirby Woods in the midst of a revival that began far longer than 3 days ago, finds itself today-- Sitting at the feet of Jesus .  Hearing Him speak into our hearts and lives, gently through the glory of His Holy Spirit within each of His children.  Isn't this where revival takes place?  At His feet, rather than on our feet.  Isn't that how the story of Mary and Martha played out; and if we are honest, isn't that how the... Unwritten Rules

Rules are meant to enhance the enjoyment of something.  Growing up playing basketball, I was grateful for the rules that governed the game.  Though they bound you to a rectangular area on the floor, they freed you to play together. It would have been chaos if the rule of "one ball at a time" wasn't enforced.  Or the rule of traveling was simply ignored. These kinds of rules are a good thing.  In the Christian life there are these kinds of rules.  Rules written... Read More

Love and Counterfeit gods

About 3 weeks ago we began a series unoriginally entitled Love, Dating, Marriage and Sex .  We began with the foundational truth that all of life, even Love, Dating, Marriage and Sex, is for the glory of God.  We also acknowledged that romantic, sexual love was created by God and is something that is extremely powerful; as it paints a picture of and points us to--Christ.  Love's power makes people do crazy things.  As we launched into the series we have decided to look at... Dating Notes

Because you asked me to, here are the notes from 2.10.10.  Please be reminded that the notes for these messages are an assortment of personal preparation, book reading, sermon listening and conversations with men like Edd Lawrence and others on staff at Kirby Woods.:)  But regardless of the source, they have all been filtered through the grid of Scriptural truth and personal conviction--- believed to be rooted in Scriptural truth.  If this is helpful, please comment... I need to know if this is... Read More

Aaron, Hur and Jeff Jones

So I am a couple days behind in my reading due to a slight detour and distraction; and I am not doing that well at this blog thing--ever since Steven May shot my first 2 posts out of the water:).  Jk Steven!  But tonight I found myself reading Genesis 17 and the story of the Israelites and the Amalekites.  And as I came across verse 12, I couldn't help but think--I am so grateful for the Aarons and the Hurs that God has placed in my life.  The people who God has given a common goal; a common... Faith, Fear, Family, Famine and a Few Donkeys

Abram was a great man of faith. The books of James, Hebrews, Galatians and Romans all speak of Abraham as one whose faith was exemplary.  As you have been tracking through God's word you have undoubtedly come across Genesis 12 by now.  This chapter stands out for many reasons.  It is the chapter where God calls Abram, where God covenants with Abram ;and where Abram stands up and sets out to a land he knows nothing about...except that God has called him to go there.  And in this we see a... True Love Waits and Works

Romantic, sexual love is an experiential language meant to point us to God; a language that shows us a depth of His love for His people that no other love shows.  Ephesians 5 tells us that God has placed in the heart of man a passion for woman that leads him to pursue and protect her.  And in this passion he has painted a picture on the canvas of creation that displays Christ’s passion for and pursuit of His people.  This passion was hotwired into the DNA of Adam.  The same passion,...
